Drone or rope-access facade cleaning — which is the better choice?

SkyTech Clean · Facade cleaning

If you have so far hired rope-access technicians or scaffolding for facade or window cleaning, the question has probably come up: is it worth switching to drone technology? The honest answer: it depends. In this article we summarise the criteria for deciding.

When is the drone the better choice?

  • On large, open facades — on the exterior walls of glass office buildings, towers and industrial halls the drone works 5–10 times faster than manual methods.
  • On tall buildings — above 120 metres, traditional scaffolding is practically not an option, and rope access carries an ever greater safety and time burden.
  • When turnaround time matters — no multi-day scaffolding is needed, and the system is typically ready for operation within 15 minutes.
  • When cost matters — no scaffolding or rope rental, and a lower insurance and occupational-safety burden.

When does rope access remain the better choice?

  • On small surfaces, where the set-up cost or time of scaffolding or a drone does not pay off for a short job.
  • For indoor work — airspaces, atria, covered inner courtyards where the drone's flight space is limited.
  • On surfaces with very complex geometry, where many protruding elements, recesses or decorative features make manual, targeted work more precise.

The two do not necessarily exclude each other

In practice many projects call for a mixed solution: we clean large, open surfaces by drone, and indoor or hard-to-reach sections with traditional rope-access technique. We offer both technologies from a single source — so even on a more complex project you do not have to coordinate two separate providers.

How do we decide for a given project?

We start every project with a free on-site assessment, where we examine the building's geometry, height and accessibility. Afterwards we tell you honestly which solution — or combination of the two — fits the task best. We do not force the drone where it is not the better solution.
